Lithium-ion Batteries to Invade Electric Cars

March 31, 2008

consumers will soon be able to use lithium-ion batteries even in their electric cars. Valence Technology, a United States-based firm has introduced Saphion lithium-ion battery for hybrid cars. Saphion boasts of the same energy-packed property of lithium-ion batteris used widely by mobile devices, without the hazards of cobalt oxide, which is highly explosive when punctured.

Confocal Imaging

March 30, 2008

Confocal imaging, invented by Marvin Minsky in 1955, is based on the principle that the scanned beam can be manipulated in three dimensions (x,y, and z axes) and filtered back through a tiny aperture so that three-dimensional objects under very high magnification remain in sharp focus because they are not blurred by light bouncing back at different angles from different depths. confocal imaging has tremendous application in medical and scientific or industrial imaging where a combination of high mignification and high resolution are desired.

where did the barcode came from?

March 29, 2008

bar code is what we usually see in the market or in almost all products that

we purchase and do you know that Norman Joseph Woodland and Bernard Silver are often credited as the original inventors of the bar code, which they patented on October 20,1949. though Woodland and Silver pioneered the concept of a symbol and a reader, it was not until 1974 that the first uniform product code (UPC) barcode was actually used in a supermarket.

LASERs in Retrospect

March 27, 2008

lasers find uses in thousands of applications. LASER is the acronym that stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.

in 1960, Theodore Mainan of Hughes Research Labs in California proudly demonstrated the world’s first laser made from a rock of synthetic ruby crystal.

however, it was Albert Einstein who put forward in 1917 the stimulated emission concept that basically states that "under special condition, a light wave interacting with certain substances could stimulate the substance to emit a brand-new light wave, identical to the first wave, resulting in a light of higher intensity than that of the originally inputted light."

a laser beam is a pure monochromatic, single wavelength light. it is an intense beam of either visible, infrared (IR) or ultraviolet (UV) light. it can be extremely powerful, able to cut or weld metals. it has a high coherence. these properties allow lasers to be focused to extremely small spots.

Fuel Cells for your Camera and Printer

March 25, 2008

the next-generation of consumer electronic products are set to make a grand entrance, boasting of fuel-cell batteries. the tiny fuel cells, which Japanese company Canon developed, could start replacing the conventional batteries used to power some of Canon’s digital cameras and printers. fuel cells are a better option for portable electronics because these cells are lighter and have increased run time between charges, compared to lithium-ion batteries.

Detecting Plant’s Health Through Light

March 23, 2008

a plant’s health is usually  judged based on the leaf’s appearance. what if you can do more than just telling if the plant is disease free?

researchers from Illinois in the United States developed a field-based optical sensing system that depicts plant health using rapid pulses of polarized light. the researchers dubbed their invention, the N-checker could help farmers determine how much fertilizer to apply in real time. this could decrease crop production costs and dramatically reduce algal blooms. the tractor-mountable system works on corn, spinach, and other crops by picking out minute differences in leaf color.

researcher Stee Finkelman of the containerless research said that with the technology, "we are able to easily see what is hidden from conventional instruments. the system eliminates interference from light reflected at a leaf’s surface and allows us to see light reemitting from within."

depending on the plant, the leaves reflect, transmit, and absorb varying amounts of light, explains Finkelman. the depolarized light reveals nitrogen content and other properties that the sensors in the n-checker can detect. changes in nitrogen levels alter the way light interacts with the molecules in the leaf, affecting the spectrum of light that reemits from the plant.

unlike other devices, the n-checker uses two red-light sources that can differentiate between the several types of chlorophyll molecules and thus reveal nitrogen-dependent plant health information. Finkelman said that devices that use both red and infrared wavelengths”tend to be imprecise, because they measure bulk chlorophyll content, which can result from a number of factors."

the researchers also see opportunities for this technology in the detection of potassium, phosphorous, and other nutrients.

a post to technorati

March 21, 2008

know what, i just tried signing in to technorati. i learned it from one of the blogs here. it said that this site helps you increase your blog traffic. knowing that blog traffic does a lot for your own blog making it more visible to the world wide web and also getting to know more bloggers and learning from other’s blog.

chills on holy thursday

March 20, 2008

rain since this past few days makes the holy week invisible.

i don’t feel the ambiance of the holy week this year because it keeps on raining and indeed very cold especially on nights. though it gives me a good night sleep…emoticon

in fact, i wasn’t able to use the fan last night because it was really cold until this morning…

this kind of weather also doesn’t fit summer. there’s no way to have sun bathing and too cold to go for resorts. so those who are planning to go for beach and wants sun, just wait. mr sun’s gonna come out soon!

be safe everyone!!!emoticon

summer ‘08

March 19, 2008

time for summer vacation now!emoticon

at long last i’m done with my first semester in nutrition and dietetics but still a lot of works to face on the following years.

but what matters most now is the vacation time…it’s time for the students to relax, pamper themselves and get over all the pressures experienced in school.

mura ko ug naibtan ug tunok after my last exam this morning. but before that, i was very pressured and stressed last night and this morning. i wanted to study but i couldn’t. many things were bothering me that i can’t even understand a word i was reading.

but after my exam and also my defense by the way, i was feeling heaven already. to all the students out there who’s not yet done with the school works, you’ll get over it soon…

happy vacation everyone and happy easter!!!emoticon
