Minding your forks and your spoon

June 26, 2008

It’s not everyday that you get invited to a fancy dinner so it’s easy to forget simple table manners. If your household doesn’t even set the table for meals, you’re in bigger trouble.

So here’s a crash course on table etiquette:

  1. Remember. Spoons and even knives are on the right of your plate while forks and napkins are on the left. Your glass/es are on your right and your bread is on your left.
  2. As soon as you take your seat, take your napkin and unfold it on your lap.
  3. If there is more than one set of utensils, use them from the outside in.
  4. After using a utensil, don’t ever let it touch the table again. This means that leaning a used spoon, fork or knife against your plate is not proper. Keep them on your plate. After your use a knife to cut a piece of food, lay it diagonally across the edge of your plate with its sharp edge facing inward. (soyouwanna.com)

Toxic plastic

June 25, 2008

Disposable mineral water bottles must live up to its name of being “disposable.” These bottles should only be used once since excessive use of them can lead to poisoning.

The bottle is made up of plastic known as polyethylene terephthalate (PET). It contains a possible carcinogenic element called diethyl hydroxylamine (DEHA). When used for a long period of time, the repeated washing, rinsing and storage in hot environments cause the plastic elements to break down and release the carcinogens in your drinking water. Re-learning kindergarten lessons

June 23, 2008

In his book “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten” by Robert Fulghum wrote, “Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate school mountain, but there in the sand pile at Sunday school.” Let’s see what re-learning we may need to do:

  • Share everything (Acts 4:32). Everything we have comes from God, and we are only sharing what is already his.
  • Play fair (Philippians 2:3). We need to lay aside selfishness and treat others with respect and common courtesy.
  • Don’t hit people (Luke 6:29). Let’s leave all vengeance to God. Positive good is our weapon in the face of evil.
  • Clean up your own mess (2 Corinthians 11:9). We have to take responsibility for our own actions.
  • Don’t take things that are not yours (Ephesians 4:28). We wouldn’t be one of the corrupt countries if we only take this elementary lesson well.
  • Say you’re sorry when you hurt somebody (Luke 6:37). This may b difficult on the ego but that’s why we’re called to be Christians.
  • Take a nap every afternoon (Hebrews 4:11). Entering into God’s rest nurtures our relationship with Him.

A Rise in Homosexual Tolerance

June 19, 2008

More and more people are saying it’s ok to have same-sex marriages. Based on a survey by the Pew Research Center conducted a few months ago, 39% of Americans expressed their support for gay unions, a 9% rise compared to a poll taken the previous year. The drastic rise in tolerance may be attributed to the opportunities given for gay rights advocates to be heard.

The findings indicate that people are becoming more open and tolerant said the research center’s director, Michael Dimock.

Aside from the rise in approval of homosexual marriages, people are also more amenable for these couples to adopt children. From a 57% opposition in 1999, numbers went down by 9%.

“it is still an issue – a lot of people who opposed it then still oppose it now. But a lot of people who opposed it then were in an intense environment and either feel less strongly or feel that people can do what they want to do,” Dimock added. (reporter-news.com)

St. Bernadette Soubirous

June 13, 2008

St. Bernadette Soubirous Bernadette Soubirous is the saint of Lourdes, France. On February 11, 1858, she saw a vision of the Virgin Mary at the Grotto of Massabielle. The Lady appeared to her 18 times in a span of five months. One day, the Virgin told her to dig in the mud. A spring of water began to flow and grew larger and larger. People who used this water were miraculously healed.

A victim of asthma, Bernadette died at the age of 35 in the convent in Nevers where she was buried. Thirty years later, her body was exhumed during the enquiry to determine if her cause would taken-up. Her body bore no trace of corruption. Although the rosary she held in her hand was corroded by rust, her flesh was intact and had preserved its whiteness. Her lips were partially open, as if she were smiling. Today, almost 127 years since her death, St. Bernadette Soubirous’s body remains incorruptible and may be viewed in Chapel of Saint Bernadette at the motherhouse in Nevers, France.

“You must receive God well; give Him a loving welcome for then He has to pay us rent.” –St. Bernadette Soubirous

Preventing Split Ends

June 9, 2008

Excessive brushing, coloring, relaxing, perming, rebonding, blow-drying – they make your hair look beautiful but what a toll they have on your mane’s health. Without the proper care, your hair may soon succumb to damage and split ends. What to do when your ends begin to split? Take our advice:

  1. Use conditioner after shampooing. Using protein-rich conditioners regularly will help strengthen your hair.
  2. Trim your hair monthly.
  3. If you must blow dryers and hair irons daily, use the lowest heat setting as much as possible. Get a hair dryer that has different heat settings, not just fan settings.
  4. Get a hot oil treatment, if possible, weekly. There are home treatment you can buy from beauty stores and super markets. You can even use olive oil types (yes, the one good for cooking!) or virgin coconut oil. Warm it a bit in the microwave before applying to your hair and scalp. Wrap a towel, dampened with warm water, around your head and leave on for 15 minutes. Then shampoo.

Foundations of Daily Skin Care

June 5, 2008

There are four important steps in taking care of your skin. Obey them and get ready for beautiful, radiant skin:

  1. Cleanse. Your skin’s enemies are excess oil, dirt and pollution. Cleanse your face twice a day to prevent clogging your pores and irritating your skin.
  2. Tone. After cleansing twice a day, it’s time for toning. This helps keep your pores at a minimum and balances your skin’s pH level.
  3. Protect. During the day, use a moisturizer with atleast 15SPF to protect you from harmful UV rays.
  4. Hydrate. At night, replenish your skin’s moisture by applying moisturizer before you sleep.

Iceland Tries out Hydrogen Fuels

June 2, 2008

Iceland, whose electricity and heating comes almost completely from hydroelectric power and geothermal springs, is still dependent on imported oil for transportation needs. Because of its geographic isolation, gasoline is expensive to ship to the country.

Retired University of Iceland Professor Bragi Arnason has come up with a solution: use hydrogen to power transportation. Hydrogen needs water and electricity, both of which Iceland has plenty. So Professor Arnason has proposed the use of electrolysis to produce hydrogen gas: a current is sent through water to split it into hydrogen and oxygen.

This has caught the attention of General Motors, Toyota and DaimlerChrysler, who are now using the island nation as their test market for their hydrogen fuel cell prototypes.

“We are very small country but we have all the same infrastructures of big nations,” Arnason said. “We will be the prototype for the rest of the world.” Arnason predicts Iceland will be fossil fuel free by 2050. (edition.cnn.com)
