tired of exercising?Try Laughing

August 13, 2008

running vs. laughing? so what’s the competition about? studies at the University of Maryland’s Center for Cardiology have found that laughter can be as effective as going for a run in terms of maintaining healthy blood vessels.

laughter causes the endothelium - which forms the inner lining of the blood vessels - to dilate, thus increasing the blood flow in the same way as an aerobic exercise.

the study recruited 20 young and healthy volunteers who watched 15 minute clips of distressing scenes from films, as well as clips from comedies. they found that blood flow in the brachial artery in the arm of the volunteers decreased in 14 of the 20 participants, but increased in 19 out of the 20 participants after the funny clips.

Toxic plastic

June 25, 2008

Disposable mineral water bottles must live up to its name of being “disposable.” These bottles should only be used once since excessive use of them can lead to poisoning.

The bottle is made up of plastic known as polyethylene terephthalate (PET). It contains a possible carcinogenic element called diethyl hydroxylamine (DEHA). When used for a long period of time, the repeated washing, rinsing and storage in hot environments cause the plastic elements to break down and release the carcinogens in your drinking water. office desks dirtier than toilet seats

May 6, 2008

Don’t squirm now, office workers who are reading this. But your office desk has more germs than your toilet. And if you’re a woman, you have more bacteria on your desk than your male co-worker. This is the result of a study conducted in five states in the US for Clorox Co.

University of Arizona (UA) professor Charles Gerba, a professor of soil, water and environmental sciences, studied more than 100 offices in the UA campus and in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oregon and Washington DC. Gerba found out that the average office desktop has 400 times more bacteria than the average office toilet seats.

“I thought for sure men would be germier but women have more interactions with small children and keep food in their desks. The other problem is makeup,” he said.

Though women’s desks typically look cleaner according to Gerba, the knickknacks are more abundant, and cosmetics and hand lotions make prime germ-transfer agents. Makeup cases also help keep germs, along with phones, purses and desk drawers.

Gerba said that using a hand sanitizer and using a disinfectant on office surface helps. There were 25 percent fewer bacteria on surfaces that were regularly disinfected once a day.

Siesta as Fatal Heart Reducer

May 5, 2008

If you nap at lunch time, that’s good. A new research published in the Archives of Internal Medicine has shown that a midday nap reduces the risk of fatal heart problems, especially among men.

Researchers monitored 23,681 healthy Greek adults for an average of six years. Those who napped for about half an hour for at least three times weekly had a 37 percent lower risk of dying from heart attacks or other heart problems than those who did not nap.

The study, which covered a broad range of people – ages 20 to 86 – factored in diet, exercise, smoking and other habits that affect the heart, but still showed that napping seemed to help.

Dr. Marvin Wooten, a sleep specialist at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital in Milwaukee said that it’s possible for those who napped that they “are just people who take better care of themselves,” which could benefit the heart. But Dr. Dimitrios Trichopoulos, the study’s senior author and a researcher at Harvard University and the University of Athens Medical School, said, “If you can (nap), do it. If you have a sofa in your office, if you can relax, do it.”

fallacy:only men produce testosterone

April 13, 2008

Testosterone, widely known as the principle male hormone, is actually produced by both male and female.

In males, the largest amounts of testosterone are produced in the testes by the Leydig (interstitial) cells. The testosterone hormone promotes the secondary sex characteristics in males – increase in size and mass of muscles, deepening of the voice, changes in the shape of the face and skeleton, and growth stimulation of facial and body hair.

In females, testosterone is synthesized in smaller quantities in the ovaries, the adrenal gland, and by the placenta. It is interesting to note that during puberty, testosterone is responsible for many changes in both boys and girls, such as increased oiliness of skin and hair, acne formation, body odor, growth spurt, and appearance of pubic hair. Slightly higher testosterone levels in females are responsible for the fine hairs (mustache) on the upper lip, hairy legs, and baldness.

Consequently, the principal female hormone, estrogen, is present in both men and women. Estrogen is to women, testosterone is to men. The estrogen hormone is responsible for female’s secondary sex characteristics, such as breast development and the widening of the hips.

Both testosterone and estrogen are classified as sex hormones responsible for both primary (differences in male and female anatomy) and secondary sex characteristics.

Cholesterol is Bad for Your Health

March 3, 2008

Do you know that fifty years of intensive studies led the American Heart Association to conclude that there is no proof that a low-cholesterol diet is observed from early adulthood decreases the incidence of heart attacks. Medical science has firmly established that high cholesterol levels found in atherosclerosis (a constriction of blood vessels that can lead to heart attack or stroke) are a result of complex disorders of lipid metabolism and artery wall damage, not a result of the cholesterol we ingest.

Cholesterol is a fat-like steroid that plays essential role in many biochemical processes for the body’s healthy operation. it is an important component of the cell membranes that provide stability, and has important functions in the synthesis of steroid hormones. majority of the cholesterol found inside the body  is produced in the liver and this internally formed cholesterol has the same likelihood of depositing as plaques in the artery as much as dietary cholesterol.

Having a high cholesterol count is only one symptom of an extensive somatic disorder. if excess cholesterol is eaten, the body immediately reduces production of cholesterol for people within normal ranges of cholesterol counts. this indicates that powerful internal controls of cholesterol levels are present. pathological levels of cholesterol in the blood result from disorder of these controls and not the cholesterol eaten.
